You may use this in tandem with a water softener. We do not have a water softener and this is all we have installed in our house at the moment. We also have Sprite shower filters which we have been satisfied with but also happy that we won't need to replace the Sprite filters anymore (For previous review on Sprite shower filter).
There is NO maintenance required on this Whirlpool model. It is set to clean itself every 14 days (default setting) you may increase the number of days depending on your usage.
There are NO filters to change, no salt to add and this unit is good for 10 years! At this price, how can you go wrong?
*This needs to be installed beside your main water valve and an electrical outlet is required (since there is a programmable timer to set it to clean itself). You also need an area where water will drain out when it auto-cleans itself. In our case, we just have the hose go out through the side of our garage leading to our grass (double purpose). There are 2 pipes not included that you may need to purchase (for product information, click here and choose Manual tab). You do need a plumber for this unless you are very skilled (and patient). In our case, because of the location of our outlet (which is far from our main water valve) installation was more challenging but worth all the trouble. It still came out cheaper (and looks better) than those big bulky water filtration systems on the market today.
UPDATE (July 2014). Still happy with this unit. Eversince we started using this, we have no odor coming from our tap water. I also checked our Sprite shower filter, the filter is still all clean! This has also been good for our hair and skin. I do not know if there is another unit in the same price point. If you come across any, let me know!
